The -somersd- package (downloadable from SSC) can also calculate the Gini coefficient, with confidence limits. These confidence limits can be calculated using Normalizing and variance-stabilizing transformations (the arcsine or the hyperbolic arctangent), which might be useful if you are sampling from a population with a very unequal income distribution and therefore a high Gini coefficient.
